Teacher

As an art teacher in a secondary school, my teaching philosophy centres on the belief that art is not only a form of personal expression but also a powerful tool for engaging with and addressing the world around us. I strive to create an inclusive and dynamic classroom environment where students not only develop their technical skills but also learn to think critically and creatively about the world they live in.

Engaging with the Outside World:

I believe that art should be relevant to students' lives and their experiences. In a world that is constantly evolving, it is crucial that students' creative work reflects current social, environmental, and cultural issues. I encourage students to engage with the outside world by exploring contemporary topics such as climate change, social justice, identity, technology, and global conflicts in their art. Through this, they can make connections between their personal stories and the larger world, enhancing both their awareness and their empathy.

I aim to create a classroom culture of curiosity, where students feel empowered to ask questions, explore new ideas, and collaborate on projects. Field trips, museum visits, and digital research into modern art and activism are tools I use to expose students to a wide range of perspectives and artistic practices that challenge the status quo. I also invite guest artists, activists, and community leaders to speak with students, allowing them to connect theory with real-world action.

Creating Art Related to Current Issues:

Art should be a reflection of the time we live in, and as such, I place a strong emphasis on helping students create work that is both personal and socially relevant. I encourage students to examine current issues through multiple lenses—historical, political, cultural, and emotional—and to use their artwork as a platform for meaningful dialogue and change. Through exploring the work of contemporary artists who address pressing global concerns, students gain a deeper understanding of how art can be a form of activism and support for social transformation.
