Artist Statement

My work currently is exploring women's role, challenges and contribution to a male dominated industry of farming.

Coming from a farming background, I have shyed away from participating in any prominent way and have used this project as a source of encouragement from hearing others' perspectives.

Through interviews on site with a range of women from different age groups, occupations and backgrounds, and documenting through photography and video, I am aiming to hear different perspectives and honour the hard work of women in this industry that in past times went ignored.

I am visualising this research through the medium of paint and photography, using the symbolism of farm buildings as an anchor.

As this project develops and is informed by the experiences of women and how they are affected within the farming industry, I am reflecting now on my own experiences growing up on my family farm, engaging with the land and developing imagery informed by our farm maps.

I have returned to my love of materiality working with steel to create the tough exterior that lends to the message of the resilience of farming.

These are pieces I have made addressing my personal relationship with land and land ownership using steel and paint and below with sheep wool and wire that I processed myself. The rough materiality is an ode to the resilience within the farming industry in Ireland
